Club La Costa Members Blog

CLC World resorts in the travel media’s top places to visit.
At the beginning of every year travel publications compile lists of the top places to visit. It makes for interesting reading and gets the itchy feet tingling with excitement about where to go next.

CLC World Members are already spoilt for choice when it comes to top resorts but in 2017 a number of these feature in the destinations to be seen in.

Destination – Cornwall

Cornwall features as a top destination in the New York Times and Wanderlust magazine. With dramatic scenic walks along the Cornish coast and Bodmin Moor, towns and villages full of charm and history, not to mention the site of numerous TV and film sets – Poldark anyone? – the cliché of “there’s something for everyone” is borne out in England’s most south-westerly county.

The Eden Project has England’s longest zip wire and a discovery trail for kids as well as the various biomes recreating different natural environments. A summer visit to Cornwall offers beaches and coves for a touch of sunbathing, catching the waves or rock-pooling, while in the off-peak seasons those same beaches and coves are the perfect place for flying kites, dog walking and just enjoying the solitude of the Cornish countryside.

CLC Trenython Manor is perfectly located for exploring the peninsula and its sights. Whet your appetite for all things Cornish with a look at the Cornwall destination page and take a peek at 7 Reasons to Winter in Cornwall.

Destination – Andalucía

There is so much more to Andalucía than sun, sea and sangria – though they are pretty good reasons to visit too! Within close proximity of the CLC World resorts on the Costa del Sol are three fantastic destinations that made the “top places to visit” lists in The Daily Telegraph, Travel and Leisure and New York Times: Granada, Málaga and Antequera.

Granada is best known for its beautiful Moorish palace, the Alhambra, which looks majestically over the town. The intricate carvings of Islamic art that decorate doorways and courtyards evoke the time past. But it is not just within the palace that quiet courtyards with tinkling fountains and riots of flowers can be found, the town is steeped in history.

Málaga has become a haven for museum-lovers in recent years with the Pompidou, Russian Museum and Malaga Museum adding to the already healthy list that included the Picasso Museum and the Carmen-Thyssen. But there’s more than just museums to enjoy. The Alcazaba climbs up the steep hill to the castle of Gibalfaro from where you can see the modern Muelle Uno with its bars and restaurants edging towards the marina. There is a vibrant nightlife with Michelin-starred restaurants sharing the city with busy tapas bars and nightclubs that close when the sun comes up.

The inland town of Antequera is a megalithic jewel with its dolmens receiving UNESCO World Heritage status in 2016. These tombs built from giant stones resemble an underground Stonehenge. The town is host to myriad other monuments including a Moorish fortress, Gothic churches, Renaissance and Baroque architecture and Roman baths. The local bread – mollete de Antequera – is a wonderful breakfast toasted and drizzled with oil and rubbed with garlic.

CLC World’s Costa del Sol resorts are ideally located to visit the three sites and the many more attractions that make a visit to southern Spain so memorable. Click here to sample a taster of the delights that await you.

Destination – Scotland

Why is Scotland such a draw for travellers? Well, it’s probably the fact that there is the combination of beautiful beaches, ancient and medieval history, a contemporary art and music scene, fantastic scenery in the Highlands and, of course, the whisky! Take a look at our reasons to winter in Scotland for just how to get the most out of the country during the colder months.

2017 is Scotland’s year of History, Heritage and Archaeology and there will be celebrations of all the above with wonderful experiences and events across the country. Scotland’s six UNESCO World Heritage sites – St. Kilda, Edinburgh Old Town and New Town, the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, New Lanark, the Antonine Wall and the Forth Bridge – are holding events

Other highlights in Scotland are:

  • the highly rated Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, home to Scottish and international art with lots of interactive displays to keep kids both old and young entertained.
  • HMY Britannia, in which the Queen and Royal Family sailed over 1million miles around the globe.
  • Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

CLC Duchally Country Estate is perfectly situated to experience all of the above and enjoy warm Scottish hospitality.

Destination – The Canary Islands, Tenerife

Wanderlust travel magazine has once again picked the Canary Islands as a top place to visit, and there’s little wonder. With the subtropical climate, diverse volcanic landscapes and both natural and manmade activities to enjoy, the islands are a paradise for a range of visitors.

On Tenerife, which is home to six CLC World resorts, the top attractions include the dormant volcano of Mount Teide, TripAdvisorʾs #1 waterpark in the world – Siam Park, the landscaped zoo of Loro Parque and the happening resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas.

The beaches and Atlantic Ocean beckon for sun-lovers and adventure seekers alike. Check out 3 of the thrilling activities you can do on Tenerife.

La Gomera, one of the smallest of the islands, sits just off the coast of Tenerife and is easily reached by boat. It is the perfect haven for walkers, as Wanderlust says; it is “the best island for trekking in the Canary Islands”. With excursions available from CLC World Tenerife resorts, why not discover a little more about the island here.

The Island of Eternal Spring has such a list of things to do that it would take you forever to do them all.
