With little left until Christmas CLC World resorts are relishing another fun-packed festive season.

From the quirky and unconventional to the devout and religious, we look at how Christmas is celebrated in the different countries of the world.

Christmas Markets in Austria

Famous for all things snowy and ski-related Austria is the most stunning winter destination to visit over Christmas. No festive trip to Austria is complete without a stroll around the ´Christkindlmarkt´ (Christmas market) in most towns from late November until the end of December.

Warm yourself up with a cup of delicious ´Glühwein`, stock up on some quirky Christmas treats or feast on roast goose, stuffed turkey or the traditional Christmas dish of ‘Gebackener Karpfen’ (fried carp).

The Zell Am See Star Advent runs each year and sets the scene for one of the most romantic annual events in Austria. Colourful lights and decorations illuminate the sky while the hot mulled wine stalls dish out cups of festive cheer.

Enjoy the night-time views over Lake Zell and admire local arts and crafts. Zell Am See is just 8km from the CLC Alpine Centre, with a regular bus service plying to and from the resort.

Spectacular Fireworks in Cornwall

Home to breath-taking scenery, Cornwall comes into its own at Christmas time. Seaside villages light up with colourful illuminations, stately homes are draped with festive decorations and spectacular firework displays light up the skies.

Take a trip to Padstow Harbour where attractions include floating displays, Santa´s Grotto and a traditional Christmas market with Cornish goodies and gifts.

The Eden Project is a popular attraction in Cornwall which houses the largest rainforest in captivity. Open every day during December except Christmas Day, the Eden Project offers an ice rink, a visit by Father Christmas and magical after-dark experiences during the festive season. The Eden Project is just a five minutes’ drive from CLC Trenython Manor.

Christmas lunch by the beach on the Costa del Sol

Fancy spending Christmas Day on the beach? Home to CLC Club La Costa World in southern Spain, the Costa del Sol offers an average 320 days of sunshine each year and a host of fun Christmas events for all the family.

Most people attend Midnight Mass on `Nochebuena´ (Christmas Eve) after a lavish family meal including heaving plates of seafood, roast turkey stuffed with truffles, lamb or suckling pig and turron, a Spanish almond and honey fudge. After the midnight service, the younger crowd take to the streets to party the night away.

The Malaga Christmas Light Show in Calle Larios is one of the city´s most impressive and popular attractions. Over 1.7 million LED bulbs illuminate Malaga each Christmas and a stunning light and music show is held three times an evening at 6.30pm, 8pm and 9.30pm. This year´s light show runs from 29th November 2019 to 5th January 2020.

Children may receive some gifts on 25th December, but most are exchanged on 6th January, known as the Fiesta de Los Tres Reyes Magos (Festival of the Three Magic Kings). Hundreds of children and families take to the streets during the early evening of 5th January to watch the King´s Procession, where colourful floats take to the streets and hundreds of sweets are thrown to the children.

Traditional Christmas & Hogmanay in Scotland

Christmas in Scotland awakens the senses with a glittering array of colourful lights, outdoor ice rinks and beautifully illuminated buildings. Scotland´s unique heritage comes to the fore during the country´s winter festivals and joyful events warm up the chilly nights.

Christmas Day is widely celebrated with a traditional lunch of haggis-stuffed roast turkey with all the trimmings and a delicious choice of puddings and desserts. Hogmanay (New Year´s Eve) is the highlight of the Christmas period in Scotland and the celebrations in Edinburgh are among the best in the world.

Joyous celebrations will take place from 30th December to 1st January at Hogmanay Edinburgh 2019, including a Concert in the Gardens, a Street Party, Bairns Afore, Torchlight Procession, Symphonic Ibiza, Ceilidh under the Castle, G’Day 2020 with Kylie Auldist, First Footers Family Ceilidh, a Candlelit Concert and ‘Loony Dook’ where revellers brave the freezing temperatures in fancy dress at South Queensferry to raise money for charity.

Whether you decide to spend Christmas on the ‘piste’, soaking up the sun on the beach, skating around Scotland or making merry with Mickey Mouse, our CLC World resorts will make all your festive dreams come true!
