Let your inner culture vulture take to the wing with a selection of history and culture tours available at CLC World’s Costa del Sol resorts.

Tangier, Morocco

A superb day tour that gives an insight into the history of Tangier.

The idealised romance of the 1940s and 50s, when Tangier was the place to be seen for artists, poets and writers, is a little faded but the city still has a certain charm with its blend of European and African influences.

The excursion from CLC World’s Costa del Sol resorts takes in the most colourful and cultural elements of this cosmopolitan city from the Caves of Hercules to the Median (old town) with its souk and the hilltop Kasbah (fortress).

The Medina is lively with alleyways filled with shops, teahouses, and other ports of call.

The Kasbah, located high on a hill, offers great views of the ocean and houses the old Sultan’s palace, known as Dar El Makhzen, and which a museum with fine examples of Moroccan art is now.

The Caves of Hercules is just west of Tangier and has two openings, one to sea and one to land. The sea opening, known as “The Map of Africa”, is believed to have been created by the Phoenicians in the shape of Africa when looked at from the sea.

Córdoba, Andalucía

Discover this elegant city, home to the only mosque-cathedral in the world with a day’s excursion from the Costa del Sol.

From Moorish architecture, a Roman bridge to the Renaissances palacios and bloom-filled patios, Córdoba is a gem of a city.

A visit to the Mezquita is included in your tour of Córdoba and the multitude of striped arches is one of the world’s greatest examples of Islamic architecture. Amazingly, there’s a 16th century Christian cathedral seemingly just dropped in the middle of the mosque.

The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos and Jewish Quarter are a short stroll from the Mezquita and full of interesting twists and turns.

Away from the medieval part of the city, the Palacio de Viana is a renaissance palace packed full of art and with 12 patios that in springtime are a sight to behold.

Seville, Andalucía

The capital of Andalucía, Seville is home to the third largest Christian cathedral in the world, the majestic Plaza de España and a Flamenco tradition that dates back centuries.

Built over the site of a mosque, the cathedral’s impressive bell tower, Giralda, incorporates the mosque’s original minaret. Inside is the tomb of Christopher Columbus.

In the centre of Maria Luisa Park is the Plaza de España, a semi-circular building whose architectural style belies its age. Built in 1929 for the Iberoamerican Exposition a fountain, surrounded by a boating lake, sits in front.

History doesn’t stand still and an interesting modern piece of architecture is the Metropol Parasol. A honeycombed roof with walkways offers incredible views of the city.

Ronda, Andalucía

Ronda is all about the drama, from the deep El Tajo gorge and ‘bull’s blood’ wine to a history of bandits, warriors and guerrilla warfare.

To the south of the gorge is the old town dating back to Islamic times with ruins of baths and steps down to La Mina, which offers an alternative view looking up at the bridge, spanning the gorge.

Wonderful wine and spectacular views are just two reasons why the Americans Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles fell in love with this small mountain town.

Take a tour to Ronda from CLC World’s Costa del Sol resorts and you’ll almost certainly feel the same way.

Granada, Andalucía

The Alhambra with its reddish stone, intricate Islamic architecture and landscaped gardens is the biggest draw to Granada. The excursion from CLC World takes you on a guided tour of the fortress-palace before allowing you time to explore the city.

Our Sightseeing in Granada guide has tips on some of the best places to visit during your free time, including the Cathedral Santa Maria de la Encarnación and Sacromonte.

Also worth a visit is the historic Arab quarter that evokes the Islamic past with spicy street stalls and teterías (teahouses) that line its narrow lanes.
