Los Patios de Córdoba

The whitewashed walls of the houses are disguised behind colourful pots overflowing with geraniums, pansies and roses, while bougainvillea and jasmine cascade from balconies and roofs. This is the festival of Los Patios de Córdoba, which this year runs from May 1st – 13th.

A potted history

Due to the hot, dry climate of Córdoba, the Romans and Muslims created houses around an inner courtyard (patio in Spanish) with a fountain at the centre and a well to collect rainwater. The Muslims often added flowers to the patio to give the sensation of freshness and this tradition has continued.
The patio festival is part of UNESCO´s Intangible Heritage of Humanity list, demonstrating “an integral part of this city’s cultural heritage”, with peaceful communal living. Some of the patios also play host to flamenco singing and dancing while the owners are proud to show off their artistic skills and share food and drink with visitors.

If you’re staying at one of the Club La Costa World resorts on the Costa del Sol during the first weeks of May, a trip to see the patios of Córdoba should be on your radar. As well as marvelling at the floral displays you can enjoy the magnificence of this beautiful city with its many monuments and historic buildings.
