It may be Valentine’s Day this week but you don’t have to focus all your romantic efforts on just one day.

Austria is a great destination for romantic getaways at any time of the year. Packed with beautiful palaces, stunning scenery, surprisingly good wine and a vibrant nightlife, you can have your (Sacher Torte) cake and eat it!

Here are our top 5 romantic experiences in Austria.

If music be the food of love, play on!

Salzburg is the home of Austrian music and there’s nothing better than a beautiful melody to get the romantic mood going. Mozart was born here, Silent Night composed here and The Sound of Music is at home in the Alps not far from this beautiful city.

The Baroque architecture and imposing fortress overlooking the town inspire romance. Walk hand in hand through Salzburg’s narrow lanes, peer into boutiques and cosy up in a café for a romantic tête à tête.

CLC Alpine Centre is only an hour away and well situated for trips into Salzburg or number two on our list, an Alpine Escape. With a spa, indoor pool, BBQ area and wonderful views of the Austrian Alps, it’s a quaint bolthole for a romantic getaway.

Whatever the season, the Austrian Alps stir the emotions as the peaks soar above you cloaked either in snow or meadow flowers.

In the winter months, take a horse sleigh ride through the forests or adventurous couples may want to test themselves on the runs of the Kaprun Glacier above Zell am See.

From early summer through to autumn, the mountains are great for picnics, hiking or mountain biking. Stop off at one of the many huts dotted around, some of which offer traditional Austrian snacks and beers.

The Krimml Waterfalls are Austria’s highest and have some of the most captivating and magnificent views in the Alps. For a leisurely water experience, Austria’s lidos are great for soaking up the sun and taking a casual dip in the clear waters.

Crystals are a girl’s best friend… if diamonds are just beyond reach a crystal is the next best thing, especially when Swarovski designs them. Big name fashion designers have embellished their creations with Swarovski crystals, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t too!

Head out to Swarovski Kristallwelten and discover the 17 Chambers of Wonder and the Crystal Clouds in the Garden. Dine at Daniels KristallWelten with their daily selection of regional and seasonal fresh delicacies and an uninterrupted view of nature.

Quite possibly the most photographed place in Austria, this lakeside town will stir the romance. Visit the salt mines or get a panoramic view of the town by climbing to the Skywalker.

Why not rent a yacht or boat on the lake before strolling arm in arm through the town’s narrow streets to the Market Square. The square is edged with picturesque and colourful buildings with restaurants, hotels and souvenir shops.

Valentine’s Day is probably the best time to visit Hallstatt as the snow clings to the trees that line the lake and tourists are fewer in number. You’ll love nothing more than a glass of champagne in a hot tub overlooking the most beautiful small town in the world.

Imagine riding through the streets of Vienna in an open-top carriage, with an immaculately turned out driver and horses. Can there be anything more romantic?

With its unique blend of imperial traditions and stunning modern architecture, Austria’s capital is also famous for its cultural events, coffee houses, and cosy wine taverns. Enjoy coffee at Café Sacher and taste the original (and the best) Sacher-Torte cake while overlooking Vienna’s Opera House.

Schönbrunn Palace is one of Europe’s most beautiful Baroque grand residences and was the summer home of the Hapsburg dynasty from 1569. Its park is open all year round and is dotted with impressive fountains, statues and monuments, as well as the magnificent Gloriette.

Back in the city itself and watching a magnificent display by the horses and riders at the Spanish Riding School is a must. It’s the only place where the classic equestrian skill (haute école) has been preserved and is still practiced in its original form. After watching the beautiful Lipizzaners in action, your heart will be bursting with love.
